Guazacapan is a little town located in the southeast corner of Guatemala near the El Salvador border. It is in Santa Rosa province which is one of the 23 provinces in Guatemala. The history of Guazacapan is very ancient.

The town was in existence prior to the coming of the Spanish Conquerors under the leadership of Hernan Cortes in the year 1523.

Guazacapan is best known for the witchcraft that used to be widely practiced by the indiginous people. The last of the great wizards died in 1979, and unfortunately the craft is quickly being forgotten. There are still a few people who practice white magic in Guazacapan, so if you want your future told...you beter come quick.

Once, the Guazacapan area was inhabited by the Pipiles an Xincas who spoke a very unique language called Xinca, which was the most widely spoken of the early languages in the area. Unfortunately, today Xinca is only spoken by three people in Guazacapan. Currently, though, there are efforts being made to teach this ancient language to the newer generations. There is in the town a rich history, and the people who live there keep that history alive through celebrations that incorporate traditional costume, marimba music and folkloric dance.
