The name of Sacatepéquez probably comes from two words Sacat which means grass and tepet, which means hill, this means Hill of Grass. This words are of pipil origin. 

Department of Sacatepéquez has an extension of 465 Km2 (179 miles2).  The capital of the Departamento of Sacatepéquez is Antigua Guatemala, one of the most visited places of Guatemala, it has an altitude of 1 ,530 meters (5,044 feet) over sea level. It has a population1 of about 259,265. 

The principal activities in this department are tourism and agriculture.
