Agatha Tropical Storm

Agatha Tropical Storm killed at least 82 people, according to a press conference offered by Guatemalan president, Alvaro Colom tonight. 53 people are still missing and 59 hurt. Departments of Chimaltenango and Guatemala are the ones with most human lost.

Official information tells about 21,465 people at risk, 29,245 in shelters, 27,112 people affected, 111,964 evacuated.

Weather should improve in the next hours, with only slights rains and clouds.

Other related news indicate that Pacaya Volcano is coming back to normal activity (Pacayo Volcano is usually active and open to visits to see the lava and minor eruptions).

Calamity state has been declared in Guatemala, Escuintla and Sacatepuequez.

Pacaya Volcano Eruption covers all the city with black sand.  The volcano has been throwing black sand, ashes and small stones.

News reporter Anibal Archila, from local channel 7, died at the site covering the story. 

According to Conred (Coordination for disaster reduction) website villages of El Rodeo and El Patrocinio are on red alert. Download bulletin here.

After a day with rain the whole day, Pacaya volcano had an impressive eruption. The whole Guatemala City and many other parts of the city are covered with black sand or ashes from Volcano eruption. 

Airport is expected to be closed until  Saturday. People around the area have been evacuated. The following are pictures from a garage in Zone 16. This garage is all gray concrete, not pavement. You cannot see the difference between the gray pavement and the street. It feels like sand and not ashes.

Lava flows have from 600 to 1,500 meters (1800 to 4500 feet),  and the rock elevations stands 250  meters (750 feet) height.

According to the news schools from departments of Guatemala, Escuintla and Sacatepuequez have closed for May 28th and until further notice, according to Eduardo Molina form Ministry of Education.

It is really an impressive night today. It all looks like it is covered with black snow, and now rain has restarted in the city. You cannot see Pacaya volcano right now from Guatemala City, as the city has a cloudy night and maybe a lot of sand from the volcano.
