Museums in Guatemala City

Although there are not many museums in Guatemala City, there are some very interesting. Palacio de la Cultura (formerly known as Palacio Nacional or National Palace) is where government offices are located, but is also a museum.

Also worth visiting are Museo Ixchel and Museo Popol Vuh, located at Universidad Francisco Marroquín. These are privately held and maintained, and maybe the best kept. Museo de Antropología, Arqueología e Historia (Anthropology, Archeological and History Huseum) and Museo de Arte Moderno (Modern Art museum) are located very close to the Mercado de Artesanías (Handcrafts Market) and the Zoo.

  1. My husband and I are interested in your anthropological and art museums. Are there any hotels you would recommend nearby? Is it more practical to be in another area for security? We are unfortunately not able to do much walking. Thank you for any advice.. Ann Bowers

    1. The Anthropological Museums are located near Zona Viva, and the airport, and that is the area where most hotels are. Walking to the museums is not a very good idea anyways, but you can be there in a taxi in less than 5 minutes. The closest Hotel maybe Barceló Hotel, Guatemala City, but the other hotels of the area are almost as near. You will find that most places in Guatemala City worth visiting are less than 15 minutues away (most, not all), if you are not moving at rush hours (from 7 to 9 am, and from 5 to 7 pm).
